Tubes

Last Wednesday, August 1, Austin had surgery.  He got tubes put in his little ears.  Luckily the surgery was moved up to 7:30am.  The original time was 9am and was not allowed to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the surgery because of the anesthesia.  I was nervous about this, especially since he is used to having milk right when he wakes up. David got him out of his crib that morning and we basically jumped in the car.  We had to be there at 6:30am.  I packed his little lovie bear so he would be able to cuddle with something while waiting.  The doctors and nurses were all really nice and helpful.  He even got to wear a Looney Tunes gown!  It was such a weird feeling as they took him back to the operating room.  He didn't cry though.  David and I went to the waiting room for a total of about 12 minutes.  Dr Kelsall came to get us when it was over and said everything went great.  As we arrived back in the recovery room I heard him crying.  He had just woken up and was confused.  I think he was starving too!  He downed a bottle and then had some yogurt and cheerios.  We stayed in the recovery room for about 45 minutes so they could monitor his heart rate and oxygen levels.  Everything was fine.  The tubes are the diameter of pencil lead so when they do fall out (probably in a year or so), we most likely won't even know it.  He can't swim in lake water or go more than 1 foot under in the pool while the tubes are in.  He was a champ though!  Hopefully he is done with ear infections as well.
