11 Months!

Austin turned 11 month on July 9th.  I am very late posting.  He has become an expert at pulling up on furniture.  He can pull up on the couch, toy basket, bath tub, and toilet (we tell him "yuck" and he thinks it's a game).  He has recently gotten 4 teeth on the top so he is now in business for chewing better.  He has not had to too much trouble with teething.  There have been a few days where he has been a bit fussy due to mouth pain.  He loves cheerios!  He also really likes avocado right now.  We tried giving him crumbled up hamburger meat and he was not too fond of that.  It might have been a texture thing.  We'll try again soon because his father would NOT want him to be a vegetarian.  He is a great eater and always clears his tray.  He is still having milk 5 times a day, a combination of nursing and breastmilk bottles.  We did start supplementing with formula a few weeks ago because my freezer supply ran out.  So during the week while at school he has 1 6 oz formula bottle and 2 6 oz breastmilk bottles.  Only a few more weeks until we introduce whole cow's milk!  The other news is that Austin has had 4 ear infections since May 1.  He has basically been on antibiotics since then to treat each of these infections.  So we have taken him to two ENT specialists and they both recommended tubes.  Next Wednesday, August 1, Austin will have surgery to get tubes in his ears.  The procedure lasts about 10 minutes but they do have to use anesthesia gas to put him under.  It makes us a little nervous but we know it is for the best because ear infections can cause speech and hearing problems (plus he is in pain) down the road if not corrected.

Austin is a super-fast crawler.  He can crawl from the fireplace in the living room to the bathroom in no time.  He loves playing with a toy wooden train that MiMi gave him.  He enjoys putting toys inside other toys.  For example, he puts plastic toys in a bucket, puts the train pieces (wooden block with holes) through the pegs that are on the train cars.  He likes to take a small plastic toy and throw it across the wooden floor, crawl to get it, and throw it the other direction.  He plays well by himself while I am washing a dish or two. He will sit on the kitchen floor with his toy basket and focus on the train.  He has figured out how to intentionally drop food on the floor for Savannah.  She likes this!  I like that I never have to clean the floor.  He is now saying Mama over and over and over.  I am not sure that he knows that Mama is me yet, but he can definitely say it.  He can recognize words like "ball", "Savannah", "milk" and "no".  The problem is that he thinks "No" is a game and laughs hysterically when we say it.  We might have a trouble-maker.  He is still sleeping great - about 7:30/8 pm - 6/6:30 am with 2 naps a day.  He moves around so much in his crib and sometimes wakes up, sits up in Indian-style, leans forward, and falls back asleep like that.  His thumb is still his absolute favorite.  We are going to have a hard time breaking that habit, I am sure.  It is super-cute, but could be a problem as he gets older.

Austin, I can't believe you are 11 1/2 months as I write this.  We are so thankful for you, little guy.  Stop growing up, big boy!

First night away

Last weekend, my mom came to town to help and stay with Austin while we headed to the Broadmoor for a night away!!  Yea!  She arrived Friday while we were at work/school.  She ran a few errands using my car and then came to get me at work.  We then went to pick up Austin at school.  I think he remembered her from May when were were in TX, but after the weekend was over, he definitely knew DiDi.  On Friday night, we went out for a quick dinner at Cafe Colore (Italian place near our house).  After Austin went to sleep, I gave my mom the run-down and a typed page of detailed instructions.  I don't think I am a paranoid mom, but I thought it would help her to have things written down.  David and I left Saturday morning around 8:30 since he had a 10:30 tee time.  It was such a strange feeling to be leaving my little guy overnight.  We went straight to the Mountain Golf course, which was not on the Broadmoor grounds but only about 2 miles away.  We arrived at the first hole and happened to be paired with my god-brother, Matt Pohl, from Austin.  It's such a small world!  I had not seen him in years; it was crazy.  The other guy who was paired with us was from Austin too.  I walked the course (and rode some) with David and the other guys.  We had a brief rain delay, but other than that it was nice and cool (about 70-75 with mostly cloudy skies).  After golf, we enjoyed a beverage and chips & queso on the patio before heading over to the hotel to check in.  After checking in around 3pm, we took a walk around the property and over to the pool.  They were on a lightening delay so David was not able to go down the water slide.  Poor guy!  After that, we showered and got ready for our dinner reservation at the Tavern.  I think I only called my mom once or twice to check in that afternoon.  Austin was doing great with DiDi and keeping her busy!  We had a long, relaxing dinner of steak for David and grilled trout with quinoa for me, coupled with 2 glasses of wine.  After dinner, we headed to the Golden Bee, an English pub with live music that consists of a piano player with the whole restaurant singing along to familiar songs.  They have song books to follow along and you can make requests- fun!  After a drink or 2 and some songs, we headed back to go to bed.  Sundy morning I got to sleep until almost 9AM!!!  Wow, was that nice - first time in 11 months that I had slept past 6:30.  What a treat!  I went to the gym for a bit, we walked around some more, and then packed up to head home. We made a stop (at David's request) for lunch at Rudy's BBQ in Colorado Springs.  Pretty tasty!  We got home around 1pm and Austin was excited to see us.  He did great with DiDi.  It was nice to get away to celebrate our 5th anniversary (May 19th a little late) and David's 30th Birthday (last Monday 7/9).  Thanks for coming to help, mom!

The Barretts!

The Barrett family came to visit last weekend.  They arrived on Thursday night around 9pm after driving 16 hours from Houston all in one day - impressive!  On Friday we all went to work/school and they did some Denver things like visit their old stomping grounds near Indian Village/Red Rocks.  On Friday evening, we went to The Jones' house (Christy, Corrie, Hayden and Maddie) for dinner.  Christy is David & Ellen's first cousin and she has 2 daughters that are 7 and 9 (I think).  We had not seen them since January, which is so sad since they live about 15 minutes from our house.  I made key lime bars for dessert but forgot them at home (genius) so we had to make a quick stop to grab some BlueBell.  Austin had a fun time playing on the floor with his cousins.  He even tried to go up 2 stairs for the first time but couldn't quite do it.  Christy and Corrie made a yummy meal of grilled chicken and veggies, salad, and cheese-stuffed jalapenos.  Here are a couple of pictures from cousin playtime.

Headed for the stairs!

On Saturday morning, I went for a run while the rest of the house slept.  David had a 7am tee time, so I got back from running just before he left.  The Barretts headed to the Cherry Creek Farmers' market while I stayed home with Austin during his morning nap.  After that, we all headed to the pool to meet David after golf.  The kids had fun swimming (no pictures, unfortunately).  That afternoon, everyone rested while I went to the grocery store.  While visiting Red Rocks on Friday, Ellen and Davy discovered that one of their favorite bands, The Avett Brothers, was playing on Saturday night.  They asked if we would keep Ben and Summer while they went to the concert.  We attempted to be cool aunt/uncle and took the kids to pizza and then ice cream.  Good thing they are very well-behaved because 3 kids could be a handful.  We made it out alive (jk, it was really easy actually and it was a noisy, kid-friendly pizza stop).  We enjoyed ice cream at Bonnie Brae (my favorite).  I lucked out because Ben decided he didn't want all of his, so I was able to help him out.  We headed home and while I was putting Austin to sleep, David suckered Ben and Summer into helping him water the plants and grass.  Actually, this was a fun activity for them.  Nice!  The kids went to bed, and so did we.

On Sunday morning, we headed to Wash Park before it got too hot.  Ellen, the 3 dogs (I forgot to mention that they brought their 2 dogs, 1 golden retriever & 1 lab-mix), Austin and I walked to the park while Davy, David and the kids drove to the playground.  Austin took a brief nap in the stroller.  We introduced Austin to ducks on the lake but he didn't seem too interested in them.  The Barretts even rented a paddle boat for an hour.  We later headed to Park Burger for lunch.  It was there that Austin decided to let out the loudest, playful/happy scream I have ever heard.  It lasted about 10 seconds and everyone in the restaurant turned to stare.  Luckily, it was a kid-friendly, noisy place.  We only go to those places these days.  That afternoon, Austin napped while I showered and got ready for a BBQ/celebration at the Hayslips' house.  The party was to celebrate Brandon's 1-year being Cancer Free!  He was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in the fall of 2010 and had 6 months of chemo.  Last July, he received the wonderful news that the cancer was gone and this July marked 1-year of remission!  Definitely cause for a party!  While we were at the BBQ, the Barretts visited their friends in Golden.  On Monday morning, we headed to work/school.  Davy (and Ellen) were so kind to cook a wonderful dinner for Monday night...bacon-wrapped chicken, veggies, salad, cheese-stuffed peppers.  Yummy!  It was such a treat to have a fresh-cooked meal ready for me after work.  Usually I am munching on leftovers while I try to "cook" something for Austin to eat.  David even cleaned the dishes!  On Tuesday morning, we said our goodbyes and they got on the road again.  They are brave - headed to Wyoming, Montana, Washington, British Columbia. They won't return to Houston until August 1.  Crazy!  Fun!  Here are some pictures from the weekend (sorry they are out of order again).
