Last Sunday 10/28 (DiDi's birthday), I left in the morning to drive to Austin for my friend Meredith's baby shower. She is due December 30 with a baby girl. The shower was at ZTejas and it was great to see so many friends that I don't get to see very often. The shower was at 1pm and we served yummy appetizers. It was my first time to see Mere since she announced the news and she looked great. Right as I was parking to walk into the shower I get a call from David. He has some bad news. Austin fell, hit a chair, and busted his lip open and he and his mom were taking him to the urgent care. Panic! I almost got in the car and drove right back to Houston. The doctor at urgent care said he could stitch it up right away but that it would leave a scar. After a few phone calls to our pediatrician and another family friend pediatrician, they ended up taking him to the ER and calling a plastic surgeon to come up to do stitches. My poor baby had to have an IV and anesthesia so that he would be still for the procedure and not feel the pain. David said he was pretty happy for most of the day after the bleeding stopped. Such a big boy! He even got a boo-boo bear from the hospital. He came home with a big patch of glue over the cut that was supposed to stay in place for about a week and it looked pretty swollen. He had not napped all day since all of this took place just before/during his naptime. He also had to take amoxicillin to prevent infection. The swelling went down after a day and the glue fell off after 2 days. It revealed a small cut, about 1/4 inch long. It is right on the line where his lip meets his chin. Because of this location and the tendency to scar, a plastic surgeon was recommended. Since Austin had not napped and we were all drained, we had to miss the family birthday gathering at Carrie's that night (mom's, Laurens, Ricki's, Ellen's, Tommy's). My mom kept Austin at home on Monday so that I could go to work. We had a follow-up visit with the plastic surgeon on Friday to make sure it is healing like it should. (BTW plastic surgeon's offices are WAY different than any other doctor's office...sleek, modern looking, doctor in a suit and tie, and receptionists who have had some surgeries....it was interesting walking in with a baby, HA). It is healing well and we will go back again in 2 weeks to get a prescription scar cream. For now we just need to keep it out of the sun. So, at 14 1/2 months, Austin has now been to the ER and had 5 stitches. I sure hope this never happens again!
